Lately, I’ve been hearing a lot of singing of the song, “Let It Go” from the hit Disney movie, Frozen. ?I’ve been hearing a lot of church kids singing it; maybe because I’m usually surrounded by them. The main part I’ve been hearing is the chorus, “Let it Go, Let it Go.” I don’t know if those are the only lines the kids can remember. If that’s the case; that may be a good thing.

I have not seen the entire movie in one sitting (just bits and pieces online). So, I’m not going to review the move here. But, I would like to take a moment and have us think about the lyrics to the song. Here they are:

The snow glows white on the mountain tonight
Not a footprint to be seen
A kingdom of isolation, and it looks like I'm the Queen
The wind is howling like this swirling storm inside
Couldn't keep it in; Heaven knows I've tried

Don't let them in, don't let them see
Be the good girl you always have to be
Conceal, don't feel, don't let them know
Well now they know

Let it go, let it go
Can't hold it back anymore

Let it go, let it go
Turn away and slam the door
I don't care what they're going to say
Let the storm rage on
The cold never bothered me anyway

It's funny how some distance
Makes everything seem small
And the fears that once controlled me
Can't get to me at all

It's time to see what I can do
To test the limits and break through
No right, no wrong, no rules for me,
I'm free!

Let it go, let it go
I am one with the wind and sky
Let it go, let it go
You'll never see me cry
Here I stand
And here I'll stay
Let the storm rage on

My power flurries through the air into the ground
My soul is spiraling in frozen fractals all around
And one thought crystallizes like an icy blast
I'm never going back, the past is in the past

Let it go, let it go
And I'll rise like the break of dawn
Let it go, let it go
That perfect girl is gone
Here I stand
In the light of day
Let the storm rage on
The cold never bothered me anyway!

(Music and lyrics composed by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez)

The song has a soft beginning describing a wintery scene. Who can’t love that?! But, we can already tell the singer feels like a ticking time bomb. Something is boiling inside of her. So, she has to explode: “Let it Go.” She’s been isolated and she is now ready to burst forth something. And, there are no boundaries; no control.

It's time to see what I can do

To test the limits and break through
No right, no wrong, no rules for me,
I'm free!

?She doesn’t care what others say to her (maybe , even to help her).

I don't care what they're going to say
Let the storm rage on

So, she’ll live her life the way she wants to live it. Sort of like Frank Sinatra, “My Way”.

And of course, we can’t neglect the classic new age theme that Disney enjoys promoting with the lines:

Let it go, let it go
I am one with the wind and sky

And more…

My power flurries through the air into the ground
My soul is spiraling in frozen fractals all around

Most might say the movie was wonderful. And the song is great to sing along with, like songs from the Sound of Music. This will be a classic next to Lion King and Beauty and the Beast.

Do lyrics mean something? Do they teach something? Are they powerful to influence our thinking and then… our behavior?

Ponder these questions from a Biblical world view.
