John 7:37-39
37 On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let himcome to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as[a] the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” 39 Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
This story takes place during the great Feast of Booths.
According to tradition, on the last day of the feast, the high priest would fill a large pitcher of water and walk through the crowd. The people would chant Bible verses as the priest would walk with the water.
During this time, Jesus stood up in the middle of the crowd and offered the true Living Water. How amazing is Jesus!? What a remarkable showman! He really knew how to grab everyone's attention.
When we look for water to quench our thirst, we become thirsty again.
We can treat water like a metaphor: career, good grades, pressure from parents and friends, etc. But Jesus tells us that there is only one Living Water that will fulfill us.
Nothing in this life will fill our hearts--only Jesus can.
Jesus is enough for us; God changes us through the power of the Holy Spirit.
We are given the Holy Spirit because of what Jesus did for us! How amazing is that?!
